that is the problem. the safest way to keep a gun is lock it up as much as possible. my handgun is is kept unloaded, with the bullets locked up in another safe, it has a trigger guard, kept in a locked pistol case, and locked inside a larger gun case. all my guns have locks on them and only i know the combination. if buying a safe i recommend a combo one, because keys can be lost, and found by the wrong person. do not ever keep your gun in a drawer,, under your matress/pillow. it is a little more lenient when there arent kids around, but another suggestion is when your kids friends are over, lock up your room or whatever room the safe is in.and dont tell them about it ie kids there is a gun safe in my closet that you cant touch! because of course the kids are gonna investigate.
BTW for that ignorant anti-gun douche above: the only reason kids get guns is because of irresponsible adults. idiots who leaves guns on the counter, on the floor, or just tucked away in a drawer or something. kids generally dont break into gunsafes and braek off trigger guards and everything.

Everyone has their own opinion as to the best way to store a firearm. You have to take into consideration the area you live in, whether you have children in the house, who else lives with you, and everyone's knowledge and training with a firearm. In my house, it's just my wife and I. She and I are both experienced with firearms and weapon safety. Typically, I leave all of my firearms except for one locked up in a combonation safe that's rated not only for theft, but also for fire. Due to the size of the collection, losing it in a fire, other than the cost of the home, would probably be my biggest financial loss. I recommend buying the best safe you can afford, taking into consideration the value of your firearms both to replace and the sentimental value (alot of people inherit firearms or are given them). The one that I keep out is my "go-to" firearm, which remains loaded and in an area where I or my wife can get to it easily. When our son is borne, we'll make some changes to how that one is stored, but for now, it's alright. The other firearms locked up are generally unloaded, except for the .22LR pistol for snakes and a rifle for larger varmints and the 12 Guage shotgun for two-legged varmints. Hope this helps.

It really depends on who else lives in the house or frequently has access to the house. Are there children in the house? Can you trust the other people in the house to be responsible and not play with your firearms?
If you need to secure your guns, the absolute best way to do it is to purchase a gun safe. Gun safes can be quite expensive, so many people opt for the next best thing....a locking gun cabinet.
If you have niether of these, then the best thing to do is to make sure the firearms are out of the reach of children and that people who should not have access to them do not know where you keep them. I like to have easy access to at least one of my firearms for home protection purposes, so I always keep a loaded gun in a place where I can easily put my hands on it. It is in a place where my child cannot reach it (also my child knows to keep hands off of guns unless I'm there to supervise) and it stays out of view of anyone else who might be in the house.
Your individual situation will determine the best place for you to keep yours. A handgun can be kept on the top shelf of a closet, underneath some clothing or towels or something. This way, you can easily access it, but children can't reach it and most other people in the house will probably stay out of your closet (once again, depending on who comes into your house). If you're worried about people accessing your guns, then get a gun safe or locking cabinet.

I have a fireproof gunsafe that has a dial combination lock. I also have 2 young children...... they have friends, cousins, and schoolfriends over at least a couple times a week. EVERYONE is instructed to keep their mitts off of the gunsafe. No one really notices it and no one has touched it, to date. The problem with gun(s) in the home is almost always a pistol that is kept in a drawer, under a mattress, under a bed, or in a closet, that is loaded and not locked up or does not have a gun lock installed on it. You can blame parents in almost every instance for being too stupid, lazy, and naive or a combination of the three when bad things happen. If parents spent more time involved in the lives of their kids and kept some discipline in their homes, these tragic accidents wouldn't happen. If I would've thought of touching the guns in our home as a kid, I would've had a sore hind end for 2 weeks. Another problem being today's mindset.....parent's blaming everyone else (rappers, Ozzy) or everything (guns, video games) other than themselves for something going wrong.....ala Columbine. Most parents today are friends of their siblings and not their parents, and need to get back into the lives of their kids.....or stop having them.

To those that say "there is no safe place" get a brain, you're full of s**t!!! Gun safe, 1 COMBINATION( that only you posess) then trigger guard locks. NO ONE can steal, even if a child can "crack" the safe, the trigger guard locks turn the weapons into bricks that they can only throw! Teaching respect/responsibility and POUNDING safety into the heads of every family member around weapons is the only responsible way to own a firearm.

Not in your pants fore sure. It was in the news. A crook stuck his gun in his pants and it went off and shooting in his left testicle. Guess he wasn't nuts about that, he he.
