There is this girl I know who is pregnant and due in about three months. she smokes weed which of course everyone is against but know on can get her to quite. the doctor told her if theres drugs in the babies system that it will get taken away, but i guess she doesn't believe they'll test her baby. Do anyone now if it's manatory to drug test newborns in th U.S. Hopefully something will get her to snap out of it and stop before it's too late.

It is totally up to the Dr. If he suspects the baby might be affected he will probably test it.

If the dr is aware of the situation, they may be able to have the baby tested. The testing isn't mandatory, but is allowed. I hope they test the baby because that will also allow them to diagnose anything the smoking might be causing in the baby and they'll be able to help him sooner.
Maybe getting the baby taken from her (just temporarily until she's clean) will snap her out of it.

They can tell what drugs the baby has been on when he/she is born. My cousin who is now in my care was born with FAS which is something easily detected when the baby is born. I'm not to sure about marijuana. Normally--they tell from what they see. I know several parents who smoked weed during their pregnancies and never got their children taken away. Home-grown marijuana is actually preferred to doctors opposed to smoking cigarettes. While the drug is illegal--there is a low risk of actually hurting the baby inutero.

They will do all sorts of blood tests on the baby and drugs are tested among the blood tests.

Please tell this woman to stop with the marijuana; for the sake of the baby if not for her own sake.

Doing drugs or drinking alcohol is considered a form of child abuse.

My cousin had a baby a year ago. The baby AND my cousin tested positive for meth. My aunt now has custody of the baby. If your friend is smoking weed - she should just give that baby up for adoption so it can be raised by a proper family. The kid won't stand a chance otherwise. I'd suggest that when she has the baby, let it slip to the nurse and/or the doctor (write a note, leave it at the desk), that she's been using drugs.....that's the best thing for the BABY.....your friend already sounds messed up.

They do test for drugs in babies especially if there is a concern (and it seems that her dr is aware so he very well could order a drug screen. I work as a pediatric nurse and we take care of a lot of babies who are born with drugs in the system and most of them do go to foster care.

Yes, espically if they have reason to believe the mother that is carrying is endangering the child by doing drugs while pregnant. One of my now ex friends had her baby taken away for this purpose except it was Heroin not Weed.

They don't test every baby but if they have reason to suspect there's drug use going on I think they can test the baby. Laws vary by state.

I know that someone told me it was in florida. But then when a friend of mine went in and had her baby, she asked about it, and the nurse told her that they only did if they thought they had cause. I wouldnt worry about it though. As long as you dont do drugs, why would you care. if you do and youre pregnant, STOP IT!
