It depends what time and where you are on the A1, it's a big road. It's usually ok when its not between 8 and 9am or 4 and 6pm. Its worse on the dual carriageway bits but better on the 3 lane bits. Going past Newcastle is a nightmare in rush hour.

The A1 is hundreds of miles long from Central Edinburgh to Central London. I've always confined my driving to the bit between the M11/Peterbrough/Stamford /Grantham/ Worksop/M62, and assuming there are no roadworks or accidents, then in my experience it is usually as free-flowing as any other road in the UK - best avoided near any built up areas (such as Newcastle) between the hours of 8am-9am and 4pm-6pm, but not bad generally. There's plenty of traffic on the A1 at any time of the day or night, but nothing to be overly concerned about.

Depends whereabouts you mean. It's rather a long road with lots of motorway sections.
I drive from Lincolnshire to Cumbria weekly and it's always busy on the stretch from Doncaster to Boroughbridge.
If I do the same journey setting off at 7.30pm it's much quieter.

I assume you mean the A1(M) or the M1. No, they are absolutely empty, except for two monks on a tandem near Leeds.
