As with any "what is the best" it depends what you want to do.

If you just want to punch holes in things and you aren't bothered by what the holes do then a 223/5.56x45 will be cheaper to feed than any of the alternatives. The most common of those is the AR-15 and it's many clones... of which I have four.

The G36 is certainly a more modern and a better design than the AR-15. Sorry to all the old soldiers out there, but it's not a 'great' design, it just works OK.

You might like to take a look at a Sig556 too.

If you want to make more noise and have a round that will stop deer reliably then have a look at a 7.62, the FN-FAL is the world favorite quality 7.62x51 battle rifle, the Sig550 and the Galil (I forget the variant today) are also very good.

I'd go with H&K or Sig.

I would go for either Chinese made Semi-auto SKS (uses 7.62mm AK round) or WW II era Mauser Kar 98 bolt action rifle.

The SKS is very cheap, yet they are reliable (but as always, the Chinese made ones are not accurate.)

Kar 98 is a bolt action rifle... it means everytime you shoot, you have to load the new round by pulling the cocking bolt to the rear. That makes the Kar 98 one of the most easily optainable guns in the country.

SKS are not very high quality, but they are super inexpensive and the ammo is cheap too. You can have a whole bunch of fun with it for hardly any money at all! I bought one years ago and it has become an all-around, general purpose gun......good for all sorts of stuff. Great fun for varmint hunting......coyotes on the run and such! And they're so cheap and durable that you don't have to worry too much about it getting banged around.....

I have modified several sks's, they are a cheap rifle both in quality and price, but if you just want to go shoot and have fun, you cannot beat them for the price.
There are alot of after-market parts readily available, 30 round mags, flash suppressors, folding stocks, ect.
Make you you check the laws in your state, and be careful, for those of us who love our guns we cannot afford to have anymore people out there being irresponsible.

I think the feds and most states have actually eased up on the AK-47 or clone in semi-auto. Go with that - it's a very reliable weapon and you can get 7.62 Russian ammo for cheap. It's fun to shoot cans with.

My dad use to own an SKS, and I assume it was legal since he is a retired police officer.
