Looks like the other peoples answers are pretty good at covering the first part of your question so I will jump to the second part. Photosynthesis is important to plants and animals because it is the only way to capture energy into a form that plants and animals can use to feed ourselves. Plants are autotrophic which means that they can produce thier own food. Animals, fungi, and parasitic plants are heterotrophic which means that we need to get our food other ways. If plants didn't use photosynthesis to capture energy and store it as carbyhydrates then we wouldn't be able to get this energy. Even if you are eating meat from an animal you are eating the energy that they recieved from the plants they ate. The energy just moved from the plant to them and they haven't yet used it. If photosynthesis stopped then we would all be in a real bind.

Simple: Light reaction is essential because it is the 're-charge' mode and the dark reaction is the 'release' mode. One gathers the energy while the other spends it. The importance of photosynthesis between animal and planet is that it keeps the cycle of life. Animals depend on the oxygen produced by plants and the plants depend on the Carbon Dioxide. Without the give and take cycle, life would not exist for both animals and plants.

Light reaction provides the energy required for the dark reaction. In the light reaction, the sunlight is trapped and converted to chemical energy of ATP and NADPH ... which is used to "power" the dark reaction or the Calvin cycle. Moreover, that NADPH is also needed to reduce the DPGA in calvin cycle to Glyceraldehyde 3P, an ESSENTIAL step of the dark reaction.

photosynthesis provides the energy necessary for plants to combine carbon dioxide(CO2) with water(H2O) to make glucose and oxygen. without light the plant doesnt have enough energy to break the covalent bonds between carbon dioxide & water.
