I have a 7 week old male husky pup who pees everywhere, never in the same place though. I have laid down newspapers with pee soaked paper towels in the kitchen and have boarded it off for him, but he refuses to pee on the papers. So I thought instead of placing him on the papers in the kitchen when he's about to have an accident, maybe it would be better to place him on the balcony. I'm hoping he will understand that outside is the proper place to do his business. Has anyone else tried this and have you had any success? Also will this make the transition from balcony to actual outdoors any easier?

We live on the third floor and are having a terrible time getting him downstairs in time, especially after he wakes up.

Many people have huskies in apartments, they grow to be about the same size as a collie

Okay I know that this willsound like a lot of work but.... Pups can be very rewarding if trained properly. you may want to Start by getting a kennel for the pup, for while you are away during the day( this will save your carpet!) Next- The minute you get home, take that puppy out to pee. Then every half hour until you leave or go to bed. DO NOT give the puppy water if you are going out, going to bed, or will be leaving him in a kennel at any point of the day- they drink when they get bored. Not always because they are thirsty.

BIG DEAL! Praise him when he does good (like peeing outside).

The only thing about the balcony is that the puppy is not going to accociate it with outside- just that he can pee there.

If this won't do (b/c your on the third floor) you may want to look into indoor grass, check out this site! my mom just got one! and they dogs actually use it. you could put it on your balcony!!! Good luck!

Whar were u thinking getting a husky 3 floors up.That cute little puppy will grow up to be a great big dog. As far as paper training u are on the right track instead of puttting the puppy on the floor inside use the balcony and the best advice I can give u is to crate train that pup now. Keeps pup safe and your stuff when it starts chewing and believe me it will. I have 2 dogs both crate trained and they are happy well mannered dogs housebroke and all I have to say when I get ready to go somewhere is go to bed and they both go their crates just remember get a large crate he will grow into it good luck

I have the same situation as you. I have a dog and live in an apartment on the upper floor. It just takes time...he will eventually get more bladder control as he gets older. Just keep taking him outside and if you catch him in the act that's the best so you can say "NO!" and quickly take him outside right away and eventually he'll get it. Just takes time and doesn't happen overnight. In the meantime just buy sprays and stuff to get any smells out that might be there.

Good luck and congrats on the new puppy. I LOVE huskies!!!

A HUSKY? In an apartment?

I'm not against having dogs in apartments. I think you maybe could have chosen a breed a little more suited for that lifestyle though.

Do you know anything about Huskies?

Carry him down the stairs so he can't stop and pee.

My lord, I hope for the dog's sake that someone in your apartment is a jogger!

Get a cage and crate train that puppy! Papers are not working for him, so you need to place him in the crate at night and when you aren't home.
1) you need to feed him on a set schedule and a 1/2 hour after he eats, then you need to take him outside. Since he's not really housetrained, you need to start from the beginning. Take him out every 2 hours, even if he doesn't act like he needs to go out. Put jingle bells on the door and ring them every time you go out with him to potty. Pick him up and carry him if you need to to get him OUTSIDE before he pees. If he can make it two hours, then up it to every three hours, four hours..etc.
Eventually your dog will become conditioned to ring the jingle bells to let you know he needs to go outside.
Good Luck!

i infact have a dog who had the same problem a baby dachscund we tried that and it didnt work either the next best thing was to box train them you place them in a small box for about six hours then let them outside when they come back put them in the box again you will need to do this for about a week and it works because the dog will never pee where it has to sleep or stand
Good luck

My god-daughter has actually managed to litter train her puppy, just like you would a cat..I have never tried to do this but she said after the first few days it was easy, she just crated him and as soon as he came out of the crate she put him in the litter box, shortly after he ate- off to the litter box. Her puppy is much smaller than a husky, but I guess the same rules can apply, it doesn't seem to have a problem using the bathroom when she takes him outside, he just knows inside he uses the box, I know it's weird but until I seen it myself I didn't believe it either.

I cannot imagine getting a puppy if I lived in an apartment and so high up!! You should get some puppy training pads and some training spray. The spray attracts them to go wherever they smeel it so spray it on the pads. Anytime he goes off the pad, clean it with one so his own smell is on it. NEVER hit your dog for going to the bathroom off the pad!!! You have to remember, he's only 7 weeks old and it takes time to train them.

Let him go on the balcony if it's easer, but be sure and cover with newspaper and clean up soiled newspaper each time he uses it.
