Sunday started out hot , in the upper 80's, and very windy. By late afternoon the rain had begun. A hurricane has bands, it's not just one big onslaught at first, it starts out with bursts of stromy weather...So Sunday night/Monday morning it got stormier and stormier, lots of wind and rain. By 3 or 4 Monday morning, it was non-stop wind buffeting the house, and rain was blowing sideways. This went on for hours. When the eye of the storm passed, it passed to the east of New Orleans; the worst of the storm for me was just after that, when all the winds shift to the opposite direction and Starting hitting the side of the house that my apartment faces. All kinds of debris was flying at my windows, and I ended up huddled in a closet with a mattress across the doorway, listening to the house groan and creak inthe wind. The wind tore off the roof of the laundry room, tore off the siding from the house, tree branches crashed into the third floor windows and broke them. All the oak trees on my street lost a lot of big limbs. By Tuesday morning, the winds had died down, the rain stopped and the sun was shining. It was around 9 on Tuesday morning that the Industrial Canal levee broke and flooded my neighborhood. The temps in New Orleans in August and September get up to the 90's, so that whole next week was hell. No electricity, no running water, and hot hot hot....there were tons of mosquitoes and bugs because of the the flood water just standing in the streets.

I'm 30min north of New Orelans. My dad and I decided to stay home .. along with one of my friends who stayed with us. We thought it would be too much trouble and a hassell to evacuate.. and thought we would be ok anyways since we're on higher ground then new orleans, tho it was mandatory for us to evacuate. So anyways...

The storm hit New Orleans at 8 in the morning.. at 10:00 the night before the electricity had already gone out.. a power surge.. a few appliances blew up. at 2:00 that night i couldn't sleep .. i didn't want to sleep ! my dad and my friend had already gone to bed .. i stayed laying on the couch in the living room where we have skylights. it was pourrrring rain.. and 6 whole hrs before the storm was suppose to hit .. the wind was SOOO Strong .. the howling sound that the wind makes was 100 times worse.. i never heard anything like it. at every flash of lightning i could see the tops of the trees through the skylights .. bending back and forth.. SO Far BACK AND FORTH the tops of the trees were nearling touching the ground.. i was so sure they were all going to snap. I stayed up listening to local radio stations.. with people calling in pleading for help.. single mothers who did not have the money to evacuate. Elders who could not drive. Larger families who didn't have enough car space.

by morning.. 6:00am things were still pretty rough but better since i could see outside at what was going on. though we did not flood we had a tremendous amound of rainfall. by 10:00 - 11:00 the hurricane had passed... But at the same time .. we heard the lightest "thump" sound.. thinking that maybe a pinecone hit the roof.. we opened the front door to find our largest tree fell.. ripped from the ground from its roots and fell parallel to the house.. only 5 feet from the front door. it did not make a loud noise at all from the ground being so saturated. we take a step out to look down the street .. when another gust of wind came.. and we could see other trees starting to fall down the neighborhood. we lost 5 trees in our yard.. yet none hit the house. by 4:00 that afternoon, skies were sunny.
there were 100s of trees in the middle of the streets many cars could not get through.. to thos who did not evacuate.

that was the scarest time of my life.. but i'd do it again.
this is my home ..
