I only found the word once in the Old Testement. I know there is another word used for that and its not gossip or backbiting. I wished I could think of what it was.
Proverbs 25:23 The north wind driveth away rain: so [doth] an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.

I don't have a religion (I'm an atheist), but my own morals tell me that backbiting and gossiping is wrong, as it hurts people and often does harm.

We are told to love our brothers as ourselves... and we don't tell our own personal business, or bad mouth ourselves, do we? And at Ephesians 4:29, we are admonished to " let a rotten saying not proceed out of your mouth". At Ephesians 5:3,4 we learn to "let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among you, just as it befits holy people; neither shameful conduct nor FOOLISH TALKING nor obscene jesting, things which are not becoming.." So in answer to your question, my religion (Jehovah's Witnesses) says that GOD says to speak unjuriously of someone else is wrong on my part!

whatever you may called it,but what i know about talking behind the bar it is WRONG much more so to a person who you may reffer as your best friend. If at one point you get someone attering some words about you then to your arrival they stop chatting am very sure you will be very much irritated and you will feel betrayed. The step you will take is to deny that person your trust. An example from the bible is we when judas betrayed the son of GOD,Jesus didnt not stop showing love to him bacause on the denial date he kissed him.Let us not be like judas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OK

As long as it harms none, do what you will.
Gossip is harmful to the person being gossiped about so it, by definition, would be a no no.

"An it harm none, do as ye will." Since it harms others- and potentially yourself as well, for that matter- yes, my religion does forbid it.
