Why do other peoples' farts always smell worse than one's own?

Human sense of smell is designed to identify things which are bad for you so you can keep away from them/not eat them/not smell them, in order to avoid disease.

Everyone's gut contains bacteria - often a specific combination of bacteria that your own gut has built up for itself and finds useful in digesting food and fending off 'alien' bacteria.

Essentially this means that your nose is smelling someone else's gut bacteria and recognises them as alien and not good were you to ingest them for any reason.

So it's just your nose's way of telling you that these bacteria are bad and not to get too close - that's why some smells are 'bad' and some are not.

I'd say it's because we are used to our own a lot more than other people's, and also probably because every person processes and metabolises food differently.

It's like when you walk into someone elses house even... If I walk into my house, I don't notice any scent, cos I live in it all the time etc. Where as if I visit a friend's house, I always think it smells different.

I guess too how well someone chews their food and what food types they eat would impact it too... Bearing in mind, when my partner eats the exact same foods as me his farts always seem to smell way worse anyways, so I definitely think it's a matter of what you're used to. :)

I've been told mine smells like pumpkin. I think others farts smell worse depending on size and appearance.

Speak for yourself...mine are always the worst at any dinner party but because I am a man of the church I am never suspected. Dont forget that they smell for the benefit of the deaf. Peace be with you!

You're used to your own body chemistry. Most people have fewer issues with their own bodily products than with anybody else's.

I don't know about that, I did one in the car this morning that nearly made me sick!

Having said that, I do think normally that other peoples are worse.

Maybe its because we don't notice our own sent.
