Is it a good indication that they are illegal? I'm not saying 100% percent of the time just majorily. I know there are exceptions.

Some of you need to re read the question. I didn't say when they speak Spanish I said when they DON'T speak English.

Simply because someone does not speak English does not make them illegal...how arbitrary this comment is.....Even to assume that the majority of the time this is true would be no less than idiotically incorrect.....Deaf Mutes don't speak English....in fact that don't speak at all. Come on lets keep this forum factual with less fiction

It all depends when Iam out with my friends we do not speak English. So just hearing a person speaking another language one cannot assume that they do not speak English. Now on the other hand, if you truly know that the only language they speak, is not English, they could be illegal immigrants.
My Mom certainly looks like an illegal immigrant, she hardly speaks English and her accent when speaking English is atrousious. But she is a citizen of the United States from birth. It is just that some people (older people) prefer to speak their own language. I do know one thing is that we cannot assume anything, these days, because it usually makes an a*s out of somebody.

I don't think that this is a very good indication of a person's immigration status. In Miami there are many legal residents who have never bothered to learn English. The areas in which a lot of immigrants live tend to be filled with other people of the same decent. When then stores and neighborhoods are filled with people who speak the same language, there is no incentive to learn anything else. I suppose this could be said about Americans. Most of us do not speak anything other than English. This is the result of living in areas that have stores, schools, church services etc. all in English.

I question how they are able to drive legally. Either they drive without a license or they can't read the signs properly. I also think that it is ridiculous to post signs in English and Spanish at stores like Walmart or to have announcements in both English and Spanish. Nothing irritates me more and I speak Spanish.

The funny thing is, i am american, but have lived in Italy, Germany and Japan for business and have found people in all of those countries who speak english perfectly. I have learned how to speak German, italian and some Japanese (its really hard) as well. So my question would be, why cant those who want to come to the states speak english? Many people who dont want to come to america, already do speak english. Funny huh?

That's not true because when this whole immigration thing started the news did a story on this one family - this man and woman were illegal when they came here, they started up a store and had kids- when the INS caught up with them, instead of deporting them the judge sent them on their way to become citizens- The couple had been in this country for around 15 years altogether and when they tried to interview the lady, she could only say 2 words...she had a store, kids born here, she was a citizen of the US and still only said two words on the interview..something like "I'm happy"

Absolutely NOT.

My husband speaks spanish, and he is a legal permanent resident. I speak spanish with other spanish speaking people (I am a translator, and I was born here, and non-hispanic.

The language a person speaks has nothing to do with their legal status. That would be like saying that a piece of bread is a steak based on the color of the packaging it comes in.

Of course this is not to say that there are millions of illegals here; just that you can't tell if they are illegal, unless, they are telling you in spanish that they are illegal. (and you understand what they said)

There are legal citizens here who have never learned to speak english after DECADES of living in the states. I'm not saying it is right, but it is completely common.

No, it's not. I live on the border and there are alot of non-English speakers, some of them were born here and never learned Englsih. Others speak some but are embarassed at their skill level so they don't like to.

Not necessarily. They could be legals but don't speak the language. Its one or the other: they refuse to learn English or they just have a hard time learning it.

According to the law, in order to be a citizen you must be able to write and speak English..... (with a few exceptions)
So one could conclude that they are either illegal aliens or here on a H1 work visa.
I go with the first choice......

Sounds like a huge red flag to me.

An old saying....

If it's white with feathers
Has a tail and webbed feet
If it quacks like a duck
And waddles like a duck

IT JUST MIGHT BE A DUCK.

For those of you who do not understand...

It is a huge signal that SOMEONE just MIGHT be ILLEGAL!!!!
