It depends on the skin and tissue left after surgery if it is enough to do breast construction well and good other wise breast implants may be the only option .some time both procedure can be combined

As there are several techniques for mastectomy, your question does not have a single answer. That having been said, at least at this time, reconstruction is favored. Depending upon your circumstance, and if reconstruction is not feasible, implants are always an option. Indeed - some reconstructive procedures make use of implants.

A friend of a friend, I didn't actually know the woman but my friend did, and we talked a little bit, had a mastectomy and they reconstructed her breast. I couldn't believe how 'normal' it looked.
They used the fat around her tummy for the breast, and a little skin from the inside of her thigh (I think that's what she said) for the nipple.
It didn't have that, unnatural implant look. And she chuckled while she told me that she now has a flat belly like she had 20 years ago.
