I have found the greatest gift is the gift of love. Find an Angel tree and take care of a less fortunate childs needs in their name. The first time I found an Angel tree the children were all orphanage kids. I picked a card from a little girl that asked only for a puzzle box. I was so taken that everyone in my family took care of one child on that tree. It is really something to give someone a card with that little angels requests inside of it and see their eyes tear up. You see these kids do not ask for much, when you have nothing anything is better. When they realize that you have taken care of a childs needs, wants and desires out of love for them. Well ,they beam , they glow, their hearts are warmed and they never forget.

Are they wine drinkers? Think about how much you would spend on a gift and get them well-researched good bottle of wine in that price range.
Take them to The Nutcracker performance if they are near someplace like San Francisco or New York.
Buy them a photo package for a family portrait that DOES NOT include you; it's a family photo. When you get married you can stick yourself into the photo. Don't let them talk you into getting into the photo.

If you are really serious with their son, maybe a nice picture frame with a professional photo of the two of you. Or a nice gift basket with holiday treats. For a few years, I purchased my parents gift certificates to nice restaurants that I knew they'd never been to on their own, those were the best presents for them and they really enjoyed them. One was to Outback Steakhouse, and they still talk about that one, and one was to a local Mexican restaurant that was REALLY good, and they began going out there more often. Made them feel great, and it made me feel really good that I gave a gift my parents remembered and enjoyed long after the season (five years later they still talk about their trip to Outback).
You could ask your boyfriend about any hobbies or collections. There could be something that they're really interested in, and they would appreciate that you took the time to find this out about them and purchased something along these lines.

What I suggest is that you offer your boyfriend's parents a bottle of good wine.
I don't know where you live but usually a good gift is a gift that can be shared altogether, and as you don't know very well your boyfriend's parents i imagine that whether or not they are used to drink wine they would really appreciate the idea.

I would bring a gift that would contribute to the festivities.A basket of fruit or nuts.Chocolates are good.If they are coffee drinkers, a basket of different types of whole beans, a grinder and a mix of flavored creamers. But, also arrive with a contribution of something you have made yourself for the meal. Maybe a dessert or homemade sweets. You'll impress them by being thoughtful and appreciative of their family. Good Luck

Hopefully your boyfriend can offer some good ideas around what his folks would like? Have you been to their house? Do they have collections of anything? Can't go pass a gift voucher (nice restarant? Bookshop? Gardening centre?)
Maybe a beautifuly framed photo of you and your boyfriend?
Could never get it right with my inlaws and I forget how many photo-albums and flowers I have sent them! Good luck!

A gift basket that has food items like coffee, wine, chocolate, cheese, crackers, etc. would be nice and appropriate. But if budget is tight, a card would be thoughtful as well. Be careful of how much you spend because if you spend too much, it might make them feel uncomfortable, especially if they didn't prepare anything special for you.

Tools are always a great choice. I had heard that stores are going to start charging a restocking fee, so you had better get it right the first time.
