First of all, have you researched the breed? Dachshunds are prone to several health problems and accidents and can be VERY costly in vet bills. You have to watch them so closely because simply jumping from the couch to the floor can break their backs and cause them to undergo expensive surgery, therapy, and a LONG recovery! This is VERY common among the breed and not just because of people not being aware but because the dog themselves can find ways to get hurt. Their body proportions are not right for jumping or even being held certain ways. You have to be VERY careful on how you even pick them up because of their long spines and short legs. Anyone owning a dachshund should live in a one story house and not allow them on furniture - for the dog's sake! They are adorable and so sweet but please read about the breed before getting one. I can't tell you how many sit in shelters with injuries because of the lack of knowledge the previous owners had. If you do decide to get one, open up a pet fund savings account and add to it weekly. This way vet bills are covered just in case.

When you get settled, search for the Dachshund club in your area. They will be able to recommend some good reputable breeders for you to consider a puppy.
We love our Doxie! They are very needy dogs (want their people all the time), and always under foot. But very loving and affectionate too! I would suggest considering a limited registration puppy, too. This means you will agree to spay/neuter and not breed as the breeder does not feel the puppy will add to the breed quality. But the nice thing is that limted regs are usually not as expensive as the "show" dogs.

Yeah, wait until after you move and get settled. Why drag a poor pup in to the confusion of moving?

You better make sure that the place you are moving to will allow animals. Some places do but they charge a high damage fee.

Start by learning the correct spelling of the breed!
WAIT until you're settled in-at LEAST a month.
Then, contact the local (county!)kennel club. They're all listed at the AKC site .
READ the BREED STANDARD while you're there! So you don't get SCAMMED into paying for CRAP.
