That's political face saving at best trying to buy time to come up with an excuse to leave. The truth is there is no saving the situation in Iraq. This is now a tribal and religious war and will have to burn itself out we are just in the way. The govt that was elected in Iraq is so convoluted that no one has real power just the militias and they have infiltrated everything to the highest levels. Thus the Iraq army has been totally nullified along with the police forces. There is no getting it right that ship has long ago sailed. The generals hopes and dreams will not change that. It would be best to get out or move our troops to the oil facilities only and keep the crude safe from terrorist and insurgents. Any extra troops can be sent to Afghanistan that can still be saved. Once the most powerful tribes win control of Iraq we can then do like all the rest before us supply them with weapons and expertise and thus prop up another new Saddam.

It amazes me that so many people have such a dim view of the Iraqi people and their desire to be free. The honest truth is that sectarian violence is only occurring in a couple of regions in Iraq. The news media has over reported the negative to the point that people have no idea what the truth is anymore. I have taken the tact of listening to many of the returning soldiers. Most of them believe we are doing the right thing and report that the majority of Iraqis are grateful for our presence. I do believe that we need to set timetables for withdrawal because we cannot maintain an open ended occupation forever. However, I also believe these timetables should only be expressed privately to the Iraqi ruling council. To make them public would only provide a viable waiting strategy for insurgents and sectarians. Ultimately I do not believe that we are going to have an acceptable outcome in the eyes of some Americans, but I do believe it will be seen differently from the Iraqi perspective. Either way, in the end we cannot just withdraw. Democrats understand this as well as Republicans, but they will continue to politicize this for their own benefit. In the end when they do not just systematically withdraw they will again blame the president saying he is stone walling their efforts. If the Democrats in Congress were truly as against the war as they purport they would not have consistently voted in a majority to continue funding.

I think to became too late 4-6 months ago. Even a general (I forget which one) said that something MUST be done quickly, otherwise Iraq will fall into a Civil War. I think it's almost into a Civil War right now. It became a Civil War when the Insurgents decided to first bomb an area which has fellow Iraqi's in it, such as all the police recruitment centers.
Once the good Iraqis decide to take up arms against the insurgents, which probably won't be too long from now, then it will TRULY be too late, and nothing (and no one) will be able to stop the fighting.

I love the current spin Bush and company are giving this. They are blaming the failure in Iraq on the Iraqis. The logic seems to be "if you weren't going to help us out, then why did you invite us to invade your country?".
Yeah, how about a little appreciation for the fact that we slaughtered tens of thousands of you, huh? Maybe a little parade or something. I'll send my flight suit to the cleaners. We had a "Mission Accomplished" sign around here somewhere.

We'll be out of there in a few years, trust me. We've accomplished the main goals which to make money, keep oil in the ground so we can regulate the prices, oust saddam and put in our new guys, and to test our new weapons and military procedures. We never went there to stay for 20 years, we just went to fight, set up shop and leave.

There will never be peace in Iraq. How in the world can anyone fight a religious war? Bush opened a whole new can of worms when he went there. Afghanistan was different, but Iraq? Please!

heh it was too late before we liberated the iraqis. they hate eachoterh SO much, it doesnt matter what we do really, they are intent on killing eachother (and us). the only way they will come together is for something catastrophic to happen that will make them unify. (and i hope like heck that doesnt happen)

Want to "get it right", I doubt the American people have the backbone for what needs to be done.
