I'll match my stress level with a doctor or nurse any day of the week. Grades also have nothing to do with it. That's just insulting.

I decided to be a paramedic for several reasons. I had finished my bachelor's degree, and yes my grades were more than competitive to apply to medical school. After college, I didn't like the idea of working behind a desk. Also, I wanted a job where I could have a positive impact on people's lives. I wanted to do something real. I initially went towards being a fire fighter. As a part of that, I had to take some emergency medical training. During the training, I found that I loved emergency medicine. The rest is history.

Falling into it is probably the most accurate answer for why people become paramedics, but I think it takes a special kind of person to stay a paramedic. I've seen loads of medics who start and after a year quit because they can't handle the swings. Paramedics are not ambulance drivers or doctor wanna be's. Paramedics are trained professionals that chose to make a career out of helping others.

A lot of Paramedics wanted to be Doctors or Nurses, but couldn't afford to go to school. Paramedic school is less expensive, and it is possible to continue on to medical school from there. You have more experience, and hands on training. Some were medics in the military, and took their training with them. It is a tough job, and the "burnout" rate is high.

it is certainly not for the pay. being a paramedic provides an opportunity to help others truly in need of immediate help. also there is something to be said for the excitement of an emergency situation if you like adrenaline.

I think its one of those jobs that people more "fall into" rather than choose. Its a way to get experience for other healthcare jobs...Unless for some odd reason they dreamt of doing that when they were children.
