My boss straightens her hair with a store bought flat iron and she bleaches it and everything and it hasn't hurt her hair for using it years. That's what I'd recommend, rather than chemicals.

yes i have straightened my hair chemically for 11 years... i just did it 2 days ago actually...it's very safe.
if you are caucasian, you can go to the salon and ask for a Rusk Anticurl treatment.... or you can do the new japaneese relaxer but that takes 4 hours and is no better than rusk. it is VERY expensive.
if your hair is more like a black person, you need a stronger relaxer like carson's optimum sheen. I am caucasian but i use optimum sheen because it is only $7 and I can do it at home. The results are identical to rusk, which costs 130+ in a salon. they both smell horrible... but i leave optimum sheen on for the "medium-fine" time - not the "coarse" time since i dont have "true afro-american hair"... it comes with a reconstructor too...which helps. you can use it for weeks afterwords...if you need it.
ANYWAY, long story short... ive been using carson's product for 11 years w/o a single problem. I then use vavoom smoothing gel to keep the frizz out. I dont even have to blow dry because vavoom will hold it straight untill it air dries. i find the heat to be MUCH more damaging than the relaxer. vavoom is made by matrix. my hair is so soft and shiny and manageable with vavoom and soft sheen, it's unreal... without it - my hair is like a big ugly bushy mess...
ill check back on this post if you have any questions... i feel like such a guru at this cuz i tried every product on earth for straightening and finally settled on these 2... everyone's hair is different but these 2 are amazing for the price and convenience... cannot be beat!

You could potentially be in a dilemma! Curly hair is great too (Julia Roberts was my idol till she did that straight number).
But we gals love choice and choice is good. I'd say get your hair straightened TEMPORARILY in the salon first to see if you like it. You might also just want to straighten your fringe.
Mind you, if you've got really curly hair I doubt you'll have the time and skill to straighten ALL your hair with straighteners on your own!
If you have your hair straightened PERMENANTLY I'd suggest using a japanese hair straightening system (they work good EVEN on afro hair cos one of my 'fro' girlfriends had it done and it looked fab! Just remember you're then commited every 3-4 months for the regrowth!
Another option is i think a product like 'extenso' - it's supposed to last 3-4 months before the straight effect drops. At least you won't have to worry to much about regrowth!
Phew, I'm glad I got that off my chest...

I would consult a professional salon about this matter. There are many straighteners that you can do at home once you know what you are doing but until then I would play it safe and cough up the money to get it done by a pro the first couple of times b/c straightening can be a horrific experience if you don't know what you're doing. You can end up damaging or even losing your hair if you aren't careful!

If you live near a dominican salon go there and they'll blow your hair straight. A lot of people with curly hair go there and it lasts for two weeks and does not damage your hair.

It is safe to straighten it...
Two ways to do it
1. straighting irons (you have to do it all the time)
2. chemical straighting (more permenant)
Just remember, if you are using straightning irons, make sure you use a protectant on your hair first so you don't dry it out or burn it.
