I think it depends on the child, and what time they get up in the morning. Our elementary school starts at 7:45 and that means we get up at 6:30. So bed time at our house is 8:00. Sometimes my 6 year old goes at 7:30 if she's feeling sleepy early. My fifth grader is aloud to watch TV until 9:00, she doesn't require as much sleep as her sister.
From a website:
What do I need to know about school-age children and sleep?
School-aged children still need somewhere between 9 and 12 hours of sleep at night. At this age, kids usually start a trend toward becoming more and more sleep deprived. As the parents, you will need to help figure out how much sleep your child needs. Your child is getting the right amount of sleep if they:
Can fall asleep within 15 to 30 minutes.
Can wake up easily at the time they need to get up and don't need you to keep bugging them to get up.
Are awake and alert all day, and don't need a nap during the day. Check with your child’s teacher and make sure your child is able to stay awake and alert during school.
In other words, if your child can go to bed, fall asleep easily, wake up easily, and not be tired during the day, then they're getting enough sleep.
Is your child complaining about a bedtime that’s earlier than their friends’ bedtimes, and saying that everyone else gets to stay up later? Let them know that every child is different and that this is their bedtime. Tell your kid that you’re keeping their bedtime at the right time for them because it’s healthy. They’ll feel better during the day if they sleep well at night.
A recent study [1] surveyed kindergarten through fourth grade kids and their parents and teachers about the children’s sleep. Teachers reported that about 10% of the kids were falling asleep in school. Like us adults, many of our school-age kids are sleep deprived. Remember, letting kids stay up later isn’t doing them a favor.

I have two kids in grade school. My daughter is in 3rd grade, and my son is in Kindergarten. Both of my kidsd get good grades, my daughter is on the honor roll, and my son is ahead of his class in most everything. I have them go to bed at 8:30, sometimes if they've had a long day I have them go to bed at 8:00.

My 8 year old (3rd grade) is in her bed by 8pm but is allowed to read or watch a movie in bed for one hour on school nights and one and one half hour on weekends. She gets up at 7:30 all week. She asked for a later bedtime, 9pm, this past summer and we agreed to try but we discovered that even after a month of adjusting she still couldnt get up at our normal time and was cranky during the day so when school started it was back to 8pm. Only you can be the judge of what is best for your child but I would recommend only trying a new bedtime in the summer when they have time to adjust and you can see how it affects their behavior without affecting school. Oh and her grades are amazing, she is in the advanced program at school and scored in the 99th percentile on her state exam last year.

My 6 year old first grader goes to bed anywhere from 7:30 to 8:30, usually it depends on how she is behaving, and I'll know if she needs to go early or not. But there have been times she's stayed up til 9pm. She gets right up in the morning and she does really well in school.
Maybe you could try differnt bed times each week and see how your child gets up in the morning, I think if they get up easily then they most likely are getting enough sleep.

6 yr old, 8:30 sometimes 9pm and 10yr old 9pm sometimes 9:30, and they get up around 7:30-7:45am. I think its not only important what time they go to bed, but what time they have to get up as to decide what time they go to bed. Both have good grades. I think it is best for them to get 10 to 11 hours if they are in the younger grades.

Eight O'clock as a general rule. It was the same for me and my sister when we were in elementary school. When we reached high school we had to be in bed by 10 p.m. My sister and I did well in school and both are college graduates. My kids are doing well and two out of three are on the honor roll.

Bedtime is 9PM and she wakes up at 7AM and she does very well in school. Kids this age need about 10 hours of sleep no matter what grade they are in. By middle school, bedtime moved up to 9:30-10:00.
