He bought 7 eggs and gave first time 3and half plus half a total of 4 eggs that reduces his stock to 3 eggs second time he gives 1and half plus half, a total of 2eggs which reduces his stock to 1 at the last transaction he gives half plus half ie one egg in his hand so the balance is zero.

The correct method is to work back wards

after 3rd time remaining = 0

before it let it be x
x - (1/2x+1/2) = 0
or 1/2x = 1/2
or x =1
now before 3rd one it is 1

let it be y before 2nd one
y-(1/2y+1/2) = 1
or 1/2 y = 3/2
or y = 3

now let it be z before 1st one

so z - (1/2z+1/2) = 3
or z = 7

one can work for 2 to 3 cases.

for more than 3 principle of induction should be used

for 1 1 or 2-1
for 2 3 or 2^2-1
for 3 7 or 2^3-1

it it were n times 2^n-1
this can be proved by mathetical induction
