Shadow is the darker image which the reflection of light leaves. Shade is where you stand or sit away from the sun.

Well, there are certainly overlaps in usage, but a shadow is a clearly defined area where light falling on a surface is interrupted by an obstruction between the light source and that surface. Shade, on the other hand, is the subdued and indirect illumination you get when an area is- to a large extent- sheltered from direct illumination; think of walking in a forest with the trees breaking up the light of the mid-day sun.

It is, however, certainly the case that the words have overlaps of meaning: you could, for example, see the shadow of a wall, and stand in the shade of that wall to light up a quiet cigarette!

A shadow is what is formed when an object has had light cast on it.

Shade can refer to a tone of colour or the type of shadow.... ie. light or dark... or defined as something in between light and dark....

Also the noun shade is what you stand under when wanting to get out of the sun....
