The most common type of mouth ulcers are called 'apthous' ulcers. They are probably viral. (though no virus has been identified.)This means they should not be given antibiotics as there have no effect. There behaviour is similar to cold sores, in that they are recurrent, come out when we are run down and we never seem to develop immunity. Here the similarity ends, because unlike herpetic cold sores there is no treatment. Each ulcer lasts about 10 days, but you can get further crops erupting, so each episode may last longer than that. Ice,ice cream and cold soft items, become the easiest things to eat. Teething gels sometimes help. There are 2 prescription drugs for apthous ulcers, Corlan Pellets and Adcortyl in Orobase paste. Both are steroids, only reduce the nipping a bit and neither hastens resolution.

Good oral hygiene may help in the prevention of some types of mouth ulcers or complications from mouth ulcers. This includes brushing the teeth at least twice per day, flossing at least daily, and regular professional dental cleaning and examination.

The majority of the types of ulceration, require treatment of the underlying cause of the oral ulceration for successful prevention; Controlling imbalances in vitamins and minerals related to ulceration, managing or restricting the disease processes has shown to reduce the ulcerative process. For trauma related cases, avoiding the offending source will prevent ulceration, but since such trauma is usually accidental, this type of prevention is not usually practical.

Take citrus fruits like lemons oranges etc; or you can pop in a chewable tablet like succinateC or LimC. Avoid spicy food. Practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques so that you dont get tensed often as tension leads to ulcers many times. Some times are also caused by deep kissing - if your partner has them chances are that you will get ulcers too.

Are you accidently biting your tongue or the sides of your mouth when you eat? Be careful when you eat, & brush your teeth straight afterwards to prevent germs building up.
