you mean guppies? you cannot prevent their death cause they have a really short life cycle.

if you mean normal fishes like goldfish and you want to put them in a plastic container make sure that you:

fill 3/4 of the plastic container with water and 1/4 of it is air (oxygen) it should be full like a balloon so that they can breathe.

but an aquarium is much better with an oxygen tank.

Try a glass container instead of plastic. Plastic may be leaching chemicals into the water that are bad for the fish. And make sure it is a wide glass bowl, not a tall bottle with a small opening at the top. The fish need air, which they get from the air dissolved in the water with their gills. The water needs a large open surface area to absorb air.

If the fish you are referring to actually came out of the river that is why they died.....but if you buy them you have to have the proper equipment to start with.....make sure your tank is big enough and you have an air filter....when you first fill it there is a chemical you buy to make it instantly "old" water....(if you want to you can start out with gold fish instead - they have something in thier poop and pee that is very good for the ph levels in your water- but then I would recomend getting rid of them as they will keep your water very dirty and and your tank very dirty, it is really hard to keep clean with gold fish) then get your fish you want in there. I would also advise to get a sucker fish or a snail to keep the inside of the tank clean. Don't totally change your water....(or it is all fresh again and it needs to be "old", remember), instead let some evaporate and fill it.....I have a 55 gallon tank and I let about 1 to 1 1/2 inches evaporate and fill it up....don't over feed as that will kill them too....once a day is plenty....if you happen to be gone for a weekend, don't worry, they can go a couple of days with the bits left in there, they will be fine.....keep your water temp between 68 and 72....too warm or too cold will kill them too.....Well, this is all I have done for the last year and a half after going through all the different ways to keep my tank clean and buying chemicals to help (which is a big NO NO) and losing tons of fish....and now for a year and a half....ALL my fish have lived and they are having babies....now I need to find them a home because I have too many now! Hope this helps.

What kind of fish are you getting? Goldfish and Beta's are the only ones that will survive.... But both are aggressive fish so they get along by themselves in the bowl....Make sure you clean the bowl out when needed, without the filter it will get dirty more....Next time you go to buy fish ask someone for advise....I also think where you buy them from is a factor of how long they will live.... I prefer to buy from a pet store and not walmart....
