As with any newly started medication this maybe one of the side effects listed. If that is the least then that is not bad, make sure that you are drinking enough fluids. I newly started and anti-depressent myself and I feel a little tired and light headed again a side effect. As with all, they will pass eventually it will just take a while for your system to get adapted to the new chemicle in your body. Hang in there, going through the same thing.

Lack of fibre causes constipation.
I don't even know what effexor is... but if its causing you to crap out mini-cannonballs then I'd suggest countering it with more All-Bran .... or some other fibre-rich cereal.
If thats not enough... eat Smints: allegedly they have laxative effects. O'course any other laxative would probably do much the same.

In one word? Yes, this antidepressant can cause constipation.
"In clinical studies, the most common side effects with EFFEXOR XR (reported in at least 10% of patients and at least twice as often as with placebo) were constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sexual side effects, sleepiness, sweating, and weakness.
