a .doc extension is the default for a Microsoft word document. If the file is not a .doc, make sure you save it as a Microsoft word document. You can do this by going to file, and then save as. Again, .doc should be a default.

Then select the type of file as a word document with .doc file extension (it is the drop-down box when the save as window appears.

you can go to 'my computer' / 'tools' / 'folder options' / 'view' and uncheck hide extentions for known file types...
