There is nothing wrong with anyone working as a cashier in a super market. it's an honest job. It's a good way to meet customers, get to know them and better understand their needs.
I find that some cashiers are very helpful and friendly. It's nice to see a friendly face. If they know their market or store they also can recommend which items are better.

I absolutely agree with the former post. These members of society deserve every respect. They are performing veritable work. Even if they are not doing it for the customer's service, in the larger scheme of things, are they not helping stimulate the economy and opting not to be a burden to your taxes? Think of those on welfare.
It is disappointing to find a devoted liberal who mocks these hardworking folks. But again, liberalism is laziness; laud the beggar and scold the worker.
P.S. I worked at McDonald's for more than 6 months during my senior year in high school, even though my parents provided me whatever money I needed my whole life. I have never had to be dependent on allowances to buy anything; I asked and it was given unto me. Yet I still worked as a cashier at the fast food place. Today, I still have not spent a dime of the checks I earned, and plan to give it as tithing. Now, could anyone really look at me and say I was "poor and unskilled" and just couldn't find a better job? Let's give these people what they deserve, after all, Jay Leno's first job was at McDonald's, too!

I used to turn my nose up at all customer service work as a kid.
BUT, I worked as a cashier for a few years later in life, and now can see the opportunity for someone who has no set career. My uncle started as a sacker, and is now one of the presidents of a major US chain, and makes big BIG bucks.
If you have a positive, energetic personality, and enjoy constant customer face-to-face contact, and hate desk jobs, and are looking for a job where you can easily move UP and UP in the business, and get good benefits, contact a large grocery chain.
I changed jobs because I couldn't stand seeing people shoplifting all the time, but if that doesn't bother you, it is a great job. I actually miss the physical and customer service parts of the job.

It's good to have a job! My only suggestion would be to familiarize yourself with the produce department. So many times we go to buy vegetables and the cashier looks at me blankly and says whats this? EGGPLANT! or JALAPENOS... That's just my personal pet peeve. But any job if done well can lead to something better if your not happy with it.

I think how lucky they are to have someone like yourself doing this kind of market research on their behalf.
I'm guessing here - y'all will devise a campaign to 'sell' the checkout chick, without spending that pesky money on asking focus groups?

30 minutes later - reading the below answers - yep, they're lucky.

They are doing honest work and I applaud them. It's hard standing on your feet all day. It's hard dealing with people who are sometimes unpleasant.

I think it's hard work and they're underpaid but I respect them. They are often quite happy to chat to you unless it's really busy.
