I'm a Registered Nurse, so I've dealt with quite a lot of dead people and their families. Once the doctor declares that a patient is dead, we proceed to remove all medical equipment that's been used to treat the now deceased. This includes IV lines, oxygen masks, Foley catheters, nasogastric or gastrotomy tubes, Penrose drainages, heparin ports, endotracheal tubes, etc. Then the body is disrobed of all clothing it might be wearing, and given a quick sponge bath. Hands are placed on top of the abdomen and tied together; legs are also bound together at the ankles. A long strip of fabric is placed under the jaw and its ends tied in a knot at the top of the head. This is done to prevent the body from being in an awkward position once rigor mortis sets in. ID tags with the deceased's full name, date and time of death are tied to the big toe, and to one of the wrists. The body is then wrapped into a large plastic sheath and another ID tag is taped firmly to the outside of the bundle. It is then placed in the hospital's morgue to await being picked up by the funeral home that the next-of-kin chooses.

In regards to dead bodies, should the family desire it, they are embalmed and buried or perhaps cremated. If the person donated the body to science, they are taken to a medical facility. When the research on them is complete, the body is cremated and if the family wants the ashes back, they are returned, otherwise they are bruried in a common grave. Most of the facilities that accept the donors then have a memorial service commemorating those who gave their bodies to research.
