I always used to think it was a peppercorn as it was quite hot until someone with a brain between their ears told me I was wrong and that it was actually an aniseed. How stupid did I feel?

Years ago, it would have been the actual anis seed. Modern day aniseed balls don't have the seed in (and in my opinion aren't as nice as the older ones!!).

It's an aniseed seed that's how it tastes of aniseed.Most indian restaurant's have them in a little bowl for you to eat when you leave for your breath
