You want to know for sure: read Islam: A Short History by Karen Armstrong.
Contrary to Christianity, the history of Islam is fairly fresh and not open to debate. Its all there in the books.

When infidels tried to kill Mohammed and failed, gathered an army to wipe out all Muslims, only then God ordered Mohammed to fight back. This is the true meaning of 'jihad'. Its accepting to die defending your beliefs.
Whatever U read a phrase like: "kill them" it is for Mohammed to urge fellow Muslims to fight back non-believers CHARGING AT THEM, not to go about killing harmless non-believers. Those who refused to embrace Islam (not Jews or Christians) were obliged to pay tax to Muslims. They were NOT put to death.
Bottom line is, God/Allah does not force you to embrace Islam if U don’t want to. If your heart does not accept God, there is no need to declare it to save your neck. God does not need people pretending to be believers. He wants true ones.
