A verse in the Quran says: "if he died or was killed, you turned back..." it means that when Mohammed is gone, you denounce Islam. God was speaking to those who embraced Islam to gain benefits/hypocrites. The word "killed" made some think that the poisoned sheep might be the cause of death. He might have taken a bite or not. In any case, he died at home aged 63. Even if not due to poison, he was ill. May God have Mercy on his soul. We all need God's Mercy.
Note: When the Prophet was on his dying bed, his close men-in-arms were around him to hear his last advice. Would he place his head in his wife lap or bossom while men were gathering around? A Muslim man (specially in those times) will never have his wife next to him when men are in his house. She will stay in another room.

Thank you for this question.

The prophet Muhammad (saw) died at age 63 from an illness. Wikipedia gives this account:

One day, upon returning from a visit to a cemetery, Muhammad became very ill. He suffered for several days with head pain and weakness. Muhammad finally succumbed to his malady around noon on Monday, June 8, 632, in the city of Medina, at the age of sixty-three. He is buried in the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina.

And Allah knows best.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

natural causes.

Edit:

As related by Anas ibn Malik, a Jewish woman offered a roasted sheep to God’s Messenger after the conquest of Khaybar. Just before he took the first morsel to his mouth, God’s Messenger stopped and told the others at the meal not to eat of it, saying: This sheep tells me that it is poisonous. Nevertheless, a Companion, named Bishr, died immediately after he took the first morsel. The Messenger, upon him be peace and blessings, sent for the woman and questioned her on why she tried to poison him. The woman replied:

If you are really a Prophet, the poison will not affect you. If you are not, I wanted to save people from your evil.

God’s Messenger forgave the woman for her conspiracy to kill him.

I advise you not to follow the people who said bad things about Islam.

Muhammad died a peaceful death.

He died due to sickness in old age.

And his daughter is there to proof it.

He got sick after going to war and waging a protracted genocidal battle, Islam was a religion of peace for only about fifteen years unfortunately.
