There are four broad categories of rank in the Armed Forces.
I am most familiar with the US Army, so let's talk about them (most armed forces use this model, though the names of the ranks obviously differ).

A good guide is Pay Grade, although it is unflattering to refer to a soldier by his Pay Grade.

Pay Grades E (for enlisted) E-1 E-2 E-3 and E-4 are the basic soldiers. They do the work, shooting, fighting, repairing, supplying, and whatever. E-1 is Recruit or Private and is automatic when a soldier enlists. E-2 is slightly better, and is usually automatic when the soldier gets out of basic training. E-3 is Private First Class. E-4 is Specialist 4th Class (or rarely Corporal). A soldier rarely gets past E4 in his first term of enlistment (2-3-4 years).

Pay Grades E5 and higher are non-commissioned officers (sergeants). Their rank represents responsibility and leadership. A solider usually has to re-enlist and show he or she wants to stay in the military in order to get promoted to E5 or higher.

A Sergeant E5 is in charge of a squad of about 10 soldiers.
A Staff Sergeant E6 runs as section of slightly more, or has staff / administrative responsibilities.
A Platoon Sergeant E7 runs a platoon of 30-40 soldiers.
A Master Sergeant E8 is one of those gruff old guys who knows everything. There is a special case First Sergeant E8 (with special insignia) if he is in charge of a Company of about 200 or so soldiers.
Finally, there is a Sergeant Major E9 (basically the highest a sergeant can go) who is the top ranking sergeant in a larger unit (thus he is more-or-less in charge of all the First Sergeants).

We'll skip Warrant Officers as a special case.

Commissioned Officers have Pay Grade 01 through O10 or so.

Officers in pay grade O1 to O3 are company grade officers. The run the basic units of the Army.

A new officer is a Second Lieutenant O1. He has some ducation or training, but is basically learning how to do things. After a year or two, he gets promoted to Fist Lieutenant O2 and knows more of what he is doing. Lietuenants lead platoons of agbout 30-40 soldiers. After another year or two or three, he is promoted to Captain O3 and command of a Company (of about 3-5 platoons).

Pay Grades O4 O5 O6 are Field Grade Officers. They command the larger units, and probably spend 4-6 years in each rank.

Major O4 is usually a staff position; it helps in learning how various levels of the military work. Lieutenant Colonel O5 leads a battalion (of 4 companies). Colonel (ponounced kernel) O6 leads a Brigade of 4 battalions.

Pay Grades O7 and higher are General Officers (Generals). These are the true executives of the military. The lowest rank general is Brigadier General, then Major General, Lieutenant General, and finally General. But they are all addressed as "General". Rarely (as in a BIG war) there is General of the Army.

Other nations (but not the US) have a Field Marshal above General.
