The best way is to strike up a conversation about something that's relevant to the two of you at that particular time- it could be the headline on the front page of the Metro that either of you are reading, or seeing a person get trapped in the doors (happens often enough), it could be berating the delays or you could offer her your seat- something along those lines.

Remember she's probably off to work or somewhere equally important and the last thing she wants is to feel like she's being hit on in front of a trainload of people (trust me- that can be embarrassing) also bare in mind there's nowhere for her to really escape so don't make it feel like you're cornering her or she'll feel under attack. Be natural, let the conversation develop naturally.

Truthfully, the tube is one of the worst places to chat someone up- you don't know when the person's going to get off so you don't always know how much time you're working with. The evening is the best time for it though because people tend to be more relaxed.

Smile in a non-creepy sort of way and say hello. Even though it is not going to close on her, hold the door for her by putting your hand on it as she walks through. Honestly, a non-creepy smile and a hi work really, really well for meeting women. I meet the women I date this way, and the men I date meet me this way. It's universal. Show respect (by not being creepy) and be open (by smiling, and saying hello) and you've already gone a long way

How about smile at her and if she smiles back say "excuse me, I just have to tell you that seeing you smile has made my day".

Or you could just do the usual chit-chat stuff like "Monday morning again huh" or "are you finished with that London Paper" and smile at her and see if she says anything back.

Don't say anything really corny like "you nice lady you want to go date with me" - basically anything you could imagine Borat saying!

i'm glad someone's thinking about this issue - i was commuting for years and nobody ever (well, apart from a few weirdos) talked to me. what a waste of an opportunity! although - if they had i may have ended up with one of them rather than my lovely bf...

Tell her she should give up her seat for you as you are pregnant. Someone did that to me once on the tube... he made me smile, we had dinner, it was nice.

sit next to them, take a paper/magazine with you and talk about a topic. if you have a mp3 player, take that and ask what music they like. it's easy and once you know how to talk to women you'll create friendships.

Excuse me, I ride this train almost every day and I have never spoken to anyone until now. I just didn't want to miss this chance to meet you. I am __________.

Why don't you offer her a mint or some gum or something, that could break the ice.
