I will be travelling to Bangkok in Jan 2007. Recently, word has it that the weekend market, Chatchuchak, has been closed. It seems like when they tried to air-condition the place, a fire broke out and they decided to close it.

As my purpose for visiting bangkok is to shop, i am rather anxious about this new development. Hence, please please be a kind soul and help confirm whether this rumour is true.

Thanks in advance!

I live here in Bangkok, about 25 min from Chatuchak.
No, it is not closed.
That rumour is bizzarre---the whole thing is outdoors---it would be impossible to air con the whole place. it is MASSIVE.

there are a few individual shops that are enclosed and air conned, but it is outdoors, wicked hot, etc.

This is the second time I have seen a question about Chatuchak weekend market being closed. The weekend market is outside. There may have been a fire but, I cannot locate any news about it in the Bangkok Post, a local english written newspaper. So, as far as anyone knows the market is open. If it was closed my friends in Thailand would say something.

There is also the night market near Lumphini Park and other places to shop.

I think this incident was supposed to have happened last week, but from what I understand it was within a small area outside the main market. I was there last Saturday and there were no signs of anything different - still as hot and hectic as ever !
I might be going again this weekend so I will let you know if there are any changes, but like the previous answer, I have to say that if anything serious had happened then it will have been all over the media. Good luck.

You suggested "i'm no longer fascinated in the commonplace department stores". don't be became off by utilising the international "procuring department stores". the countless department stores in Bangkok are unlike what you have gotten in the states. MBK procuring mall is a huge mall yet I nevertheless like procuring there. that's an journey in itself. There ARE good purchase available if no longer in effortless terms to pass in and take in the ambience. while i'm in Thailand, I nevertheless pass there for a glance around. a minimum of i will seek for some great outfits good purchase in air-problem convenience extremely than the warmth of Pratunam outfits marketplace (in spite of the undeniable fact that i will nevertheless pass to Pratunam). around the line from the MBK is yet another mall this is much greater crowded and geared to youthful, much less funds-to-spend crowd and there are good purchase there too. Siam Paragon mall - diagonally opposite MBK has an aquarium in the decrease point. an incredible place for a destroy day from each and every of the procuring. The nutrition courtroom (on the comparable point) had fish tanks to get exhilaration from whilst you sit down there having a calming lunch for much low priced (considered one of them has those mind-blowing organic white gold fish in them). pass. discover. get exhilaration from. Be warned - procuring in Bangkok isn't for the faint hearted. it relatively is shop til you drop - and then some greater!

I believe the confusion is with a market near to Chatuchak weekend market that is embroiled in a deleoper and tenant dispute. This is just outside the weekend market and does not affect the place at all. You can be rest assured.
