Serum and plasma are both blood specimens. The difference between the two is that when collected blood is allowed to clot, rimmed and then centrifuged for 5-10 minutes at 2,500 rpm, a clear, yellow supernatant fluid is obtained and that is called serum. On the other hand, when collected blood is treated with an anticoagulant and then centrifuged at 5-10 minutes at 2,500 rpm (revolutions per minute), a clear yellow supernatant fluid is obtained and that is called plasma. Serum is clearer than plasma because plasma has an additional protein which is fibrinogen, Fibrinogen is not present in serum. Serum needs to be rimmed before centrifugation, plasma does not need rimming and incubation. Serum is more ideal to use for laboratory exams because of the absence of interfering substances like fibrinogen.

Serum is the portion of centrifuged blood that is collected in the blood tube that does not contain anti-coagulant where as plasma is collected in the blood tube that has anti-coagulant in it.
And so, in serum all the coagulation factors are used up in the coaglation process but not in the blood but not in plasma. Hope this help. :)

serum is the liquid part of blood AFTER coagulation, therfore devoid of clotting factors as fibrinogen. plasma is the liquid, cell-free (by centrifugation, for example) part of blood, that has been treated with anti-coagulants.
