You can do a search on cheapflights, singapore airlines are doing a good deal to perth at the mo.
The earlier you book, the cheaper it is.
Expedia tends to be pretty cheap.
Cheapest way is to sit in an airport and wait for an empty seat at the last minute or ceefax on TV (my brother gets his cheap fights to America that way) but you have gotta be ready to leave pretty much there and then.

Johannesburg is the next biggest city in Africa, with an increase of than 3 million persons calling this busy city home and if you wish to visit that extraordinary city then that hotelbye is the spot to start. Johannesburg presents guests an experience as special and diverse as the town itself. If you are on business, in search of a social experience, an adrenaline rush or simply want to flake out and unwind for a few days, the town of Johannesburg has every thing you're trying to find and more! In Johannesburg you are able to visit the Soweto (an abbreviation for South-western Townships) at 20 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. That place presents guests a journey to the soul of the struggle for freedom and the birthplace of the struggle for democracy.

That depends where you are going from, but these are good websites for prices:
www.travelsupermarket.com - This does a lot of the searching for you (from UK only)
www.ebookers.com
www.lastminute.com
www.sidestep.com
Keep an eye out for the restrictions though. The lower the price, the more restrictions.
Good luck

It would make more sense to go south, as that's going to be the shortest route. Someone I know flew from South Asia to Sao Paolo via Johannesburg. I though it was a strange place to transit but he told me it was cheap. I would try New Zealand first.
