Matrix is like a checkerboard or chessboard.....

An LCD matrix has rows and columns....lines that go left to right AND up to down....to turn on one Square, you fire up one ROW and one COLUMN....the intersection lights up, and that is one SQUARE!

Now you probably have a "Black Matrix" Picture Tube....what they do there is just to use a Darker Phosphor than the older "Gray-Green" phosphor mixture used years ago.....the "Matrix" part of the equation has ALWAYS been around since Color TV came on the market in the 60's.....there is a Red, a Green and a Blue SQUARE (or rectangle) that the electron beams can light up......

Sometimes manufacturers like to use certain words to enhance purchasing.....
Other times, there actually IS an IMPROVEMENT.....

In your case, a "matrix picture tube" is no different than a picture tube.....Now if it were "black matrix"...that's just improved phosphor color so blacks look true black, rather than green-black

Ok then, since nobody else seems to know how to answer your question , here it is ! in your case you refer to a dot matrix pic tube ! which means that the coloured phosphor dots ( red , blue , green ) are deposited onto the inner surface of the pic tube screen in orderly groups of the R, G ,B ! as opposed to them being sprayed higgly piggly all over randomly !!. By the way the phosphor dots are photographically etched onto the glass !!. Cheers Pete!
Reggieman has given an excellent answer and covered the bits that I missed ! Thanks R
