Recently the Anglicans changed their doctrine to say that hell is not literal and God will not torture people eternally. I have heard that the Catholics have changed their teaching too. Does anyone know, and can you link me to some Catholic sources that explain the new doctrine?

newadvent.org is a good site, but it refers to the old New Catholic encyclopedia. Are there any articles that outline the current teaching?

The Catholic Church does teach about a literal hell.

Hell is the state of complete and final self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed, reserved for those who refuse by their own free choice to believe and be converted from sin, even to the end of their lives

No one really knows what hell is like. It has been described by people who have not been there as everything from flames to a frozen lake (Dante).

With love in Christ.

Whatever you choose to call it, makes no difference. Changing the doctrine to appease man, doesn't mean a thing. The bottom line is there will still be eternal torment apart from God, for the unforgiven and eternal bliss with God, for the forgiven.

Jehovah's Witnesses have always taught that a burning hell does not exist. Instead, hell is the common grave of mankind. Concerning the condition of the dead, Eccl. 9:5 says that the "dead are conscious of nothing at all."
