I would'nt go out with my bestfriends' ex cause I don't want to betray her trust in me. I do understand that its fair game to get him because he is single and not hers anymore, considering that, if I were to make a play for him? It will depend on why they ended, how serious they were and see how my friend would feel about it. Its not a simple situation. I won't mess with it if possible.

No,even though they are ex's you shouldn't do that to him or her. It's all about respect. And why would you want their left over baggage. They will treat you no better. And in the long run your be the one hurt,they may be dating you for revenge.
