The Muslims pronounce the word as 'Assalammu alaikum'. It means 'Peace Be Upon You', sort of like 'Hello' or 'Hi' when you greet someone. It can also be used to say 'Goodbye'. When a person is greeted by another person, he/she may reply with 'Wa alaikummu salam' which pretty much means 'Peace Be Upon You Too' or 'Fine, I Wish You the Same Too'. See, we Muslims are peaceful in nature:-)

heh a generic hello. May the blessings of Allah greet you or something like that. It's the same as Aloha or Good Day, meaning hello and Goodbye, depending.
