I would say to buy from a person that sells and appraises stones. I true gemologist will also tell you whether it is real or not. Be careful who you buy from tho, because it could be a really good fake stone. Actually amethyst is not really an expensive stone anyway, not like rubies, diamonds, sapphires, etc,
If my ex-husband was still alive he could tell you exactly how to check it. He was a rock hound, gemologist and silver smith. Wish I could help you more.

I have an amethyst ring and the jewler, said he'd have to spectum test it to see if it's real.

I was visiting my family and I didn't have time, so I don't know anything else. I hope I helped.
