My first thought was some type of board game. Families don't always do enough together anymore, so that might be good! (There are outside "yard" games that are fun, too - but that may depend on the climate where they live.)
If they like movies, you could get them one or two DVDs that you think they would enjoy. Movies are always good! On that same theme, maybe a gift certificate to Blockbuster or another movie rental place where they can pick out what they want to watch. There is always a gift certificate to a nearby theatre, too.
Let's see, maybe a gift certificate to a restaurant you know they like. Oh, and I just thought of something else... one thing I bought for us that we all enjoy is a dart board! Everyone likes it!!! Great if they have somewhere to put it, of course.

I've always been fond of baking a large layer cake. (Cost of frosting and cake mix, if you're not one to follow recipes, is very low.) There's also the option of getting them a gift certificate to a arcade, somewhere that has all sorts of games, like pool or billiards for Mom and Dad, video games for the kids, and things to watch and do for the kids that aren't particularly active. Not to mention, those places have social activities for the whole family, and you won't have to worry that anyone gets "any more" than any of the rest.

Go to the dollar store and fill a basket with family stuff, games, puzzles, candy, etc. Also a theme box or basket would be good. Do they like eating, then fill with the fixings for a special dinner including the bowl or pot. Do they like movies, then do the same with popcorn, a movie, a big bowl, some candy etc.

Gift food baskets are always great--but if you'd like something different, why don't you look for an interesting boardgame that all the kids can play, such as monopoly or cards.

A comprehensive journal on Birth Control. Too late for mom and dad but perhaps the children could benefit.
