Because they were testing TRAINABILITY and not intelligence. Hounds were bred to hunt on their own without constant direction from the handler. Which dog is smarter, the one that prefers to think for himself, or the one who constantly looks to the handler for guidance?

Gitem is right, they just don't effin CARE what you want, they know what THEY want! Intelligence and trainability are two different things. Sighthounds are extremely smart and will figure out the darndest things that other breeds would never even think of.

Good for you Miriam! I have so much more respect for someone who titles a SH instead of the endless Shelties and Goldens! ANYONE can train a Golden and do well in the ring, but doing it with a SH is something else entirely! Some judges love to see it as well, I have had many comments on my non-regular OB dogs.

Yes, you can compare a GSD to a shih tzu if you are comparing canine intelligence. And it would depend on the genetic make up of the dog. Canine intelligence should be measured by how well the dog is able to perform the behaviors that are used for the job the breed was bred to do. A GSD was bred to be a herding dog of the old world type. A Shih Tzu was bred to be a pet from the very beginning of the breed. So if the GSD doesn't know how to patrol a border or keep sheep in an area but the Shih Tzu behaves as a very good pet, then the Shih Tzu is smarter. Unfortunately, most lists of 'intelligent' dog breeds uses one criteria: how well does the dog listen to people. A very narrow criteria when you consider that we have so many breeds because they were bred for a variety of jobs. And some of those jobs require a dog work and think on his own, so your 'intelligent dog' lists will exclude them. Not very smart in my opinion. I think the people who make up those lists are the least informed on the various dog breeds and do harm to the breeds rather than any good.

I have no way to tell since I have not had experience with all breeds. Someone told me that Afghan hounds are stupid but I found the one I worked with to be a quick learner, and easy to train. Decades ago, the American version of the Irish setter was considered very stupid by many people but I've seen some since then that knocked me out at obedience trials. WOW! Often, we confuse trainability with intelligence. Extremely intelligent dogs can be a real trial to their owners as they quickly learn to escape and how to get their ways and how to steal what they want. Most people do best with a moderately smart dog, one that is easy to train. Breeds that were once thought of as really dumb are now beginning to shine with the use of kind and gentle reward-based training. Wasn't Albert Einstein told he was stupid? I've known many very bright people who refused to study certain things in school that they found to be boring or time wasting. So, the least intelligent breed of dog is....unknown at this time.

As noted above, it's because the test was not really an intelligence test but a trainablilty test. Afghan Hounds are very intelligent and can learn new things quickly and easily.....if they want to. The problem is that they have little interest in learning the things that people want them to learn. Like most hounds, they want to know what's in it for them.

Least Trainable Dogs

I've had almost exclusively sighthounds for 30 years, and the majority were afghans. They are considered dumb because they are not robots. They are extremely intelligent, therefore also easily bored and will not endlessly repeat anything. There's a huge difference between intelligence and trainability which some people don't get. You need to be smarter than the afghan to teach him - meaning you need to be flexible in your training - methods that work for a border collie will not work for an afghan, or ant other sight hound,

I know that when I was putting my newfie through obedience I also worked an afghan male (mostly for fun) and he was amazingly quick to learn everything!! But once he knew it, he wanted to do something new. That's not a dumb dog - that's a thinking, independent dog. And I value a dog who can think independently much more than the typical robot type of obedience dog!

Afghan hounds are an ancient breed. They are originally a hunting dog (sight hunting) with great speed and agility intended to hunt gazelle. Most animals, once removed from their intended purpose due degrade to a fraction of what they once were. Bulldogs for example were bred as pit dogs to fight bulls, thus the name! The bull was boned(horns dulled or removed by cutting) and betting took place on how many dogs it took to bring down the bull. the characteristic "undershot' jaw on the bulldog was bred into the breed as well as the skin folds of the muzzle so as to allow the dog to bite from underneath and upwards on the bull. The skin folds channeled the presumed bloodflow from the wound around the dogs face and allowed him to continue breathing and not drowning in the mess! Yet today, English Bulldogs are some of the most jovial and mild mannered dogs on the planet, go figure. The bottom line is, there are no stupid dogs, very rarely do they repeat the same mistake twice, I can't say the same for humans.
