If you mean the window shades, it's a new thing: they discovered it leads to some fuel savings to do that.

I actually saw this on a documentary recently. This was an American Airlines flight right?

They do this for one reason only. To keep the sun from heating up the cabin too much and working the air conditioning system harder, thereby saving fuel.

The shades need to be up for landing in case of an emergency, so rescuers can find passengers, but apparently AA wants the shades down on takeoff to save a little gas.

The windows are kept closed all the time, it's not possible to open them otherwise everyone would be sucked out of the plane.

passenger jet windows dont open and i dont know y you would say such a stupid thing (for all the people responding). but when i travel i do notice they want the shades up...maybe cause of safty reasons......how on earth would it save on fuel is the shades are inside the cabin....there not air tight when u close them..there cheap pieces of plastic.

its something related to air pressure, that need to be controlled otherwise it will be difficult for the passengers to survive and while in air the plane also cant float is windows are not closed,

Pressurizing and depressurizing the cabin perhaps?
