It is the brain's logical response to a situation, but it is greatly affected by ones beliefs. A good example was in 1987, a semi truck had gone off road into a drainage ditch and was on fire near the New Mexico/Arizona border. There was a severely injured driver lying near the wreck, but not where we could easily got to him. His clothes had already been melted to his body.
Some Hunt Transportation drivers and me figured out that if we came under the freeway, through a drainage pipe, we could reach him and carry him back to the other side. We got no help from the arriving police, so we did it ourselves, using a blanket to carry him on. We were fortunate in the the pipe was feeding the fire, so we had cool air keeping us from being burned, but we didn't know that until we got across.
Now, 20 years later, I can't say why we did it, only that a man needed us. Unfortunately, our efforts were a failure, as he died later that day, but at least he was slowly cooking to death like he was near the wreck.
I heard from his widow. It was his final trip before retirement. It was the only time he had a co-diver, who was to bring the truck back. The co-driver was still in the driver's seat.

I'm not sure if I understand the context you're putting the word brave to, but if it's helping someone despite the risk, then:
Depends on the situation, but I think it has something to do with putting other people before themselves, despite the risk. You don't have time to think, you just do it.

It is the fight or flight response. You either stay and fight for your life or you will run for your life. You do not know which one you will do until you are presented with a life threatening situation.
