The hoards usually head for London and all the usual haunts - Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, etc., etc. For some reason Stratford-upon-Avon is popular because of its links with Shakespeare, and Canterbury and York get plenty of visitors to their respective cathedrals. Edinburgh Castle is popular too. Stonehenge is an obvious one.

In terms of visitor numbers and tourist numbers the number one spot probably belongs to a theme park rather than an historical building. I'd say either Alton Towers or Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Blackpool Tower as well, that's probably high up on the list. The Eden Project thingy in Cornwall. Most of the National Parks - Snowdonia, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Dartmoor, etc., Loch Ness. The list goes on...

The top sights in the UK are: the Costa del Chav (Essex), the breathtaking metropolis of Middleborough, the romantic steelworks of Scunthorpe, Newport (South Wales) - see the drizzle over the docks.....mmmm, the fabulous bazaars and souks of romantic Lakeside and Bluewater, the awesome wilderness of Basingstoke, the breathtaking mountains of Norfolk, North Wales with it's legendary friendly welcome to English speakers, the cosy lanes of Skelmersdale full of cheery 'scousers', Dagenham - twinned with Beirut and finally Birmingham - with more canals than Venice (Actually this bit's true.....)
Enjoy yourself anyway, even if you go to some of the places mentioned.

Forget the pissy south, the true answer is the Lake District.
It knocks spots off everything else.
