The possibility of being infected with Hep B is actually relatively high for medical workers. The good news is that you can be vaccinated. Hep C. is not so commonly acquired in the hospital, but I actually seen two cases acquired by medical workers. The bad news is Hep C. is for worse than Hep B and there is no vaccine. It is not necessarily true that it is riskier to be a Doctor now than it is in the old days. As in the case of Hep C, there may not have been an increase in infection rate, but merely seems like it since we only recently been looking for that virus. Its hard to say what is ones risk in getting Hep C, since we have only recently started looking at it. The belief is that there are a lot of undiagnosed individuals out there. As for HIV, the infection rate for medical employees are extremely low, but does exist.

yes, there is a risk. however if you are trained as a surgeon, which i hope you would be since you would be preforming surgery,(lol) then you will not be at high risk. because you will be in a sterile environment. and besides that, even if you do cut yourself and come in direct contact with your patience's blood, your in a hospital. i can't think of a better place to contract a virus then in a hospital. and you would be a doctor. which means you would have doctor friends... so your health care would be the best and for cheap, if not free.

and besides that, follow your dreams kid. if you want to be a doctor then be a doctor. listen to your father because he probably will give you good advice but ultimately the choice is yours. never let someone live your life for you.

Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B are lifelong infections that will eventually destroy your liver no matter what. They are acquired through sex and blood contact with an infected individual. So a doctor can get the virus if he is careless enough to either prick or cut himself during the operation. But the risk is the same for those who have promiscous partnerships and addicts.

Yes it is possible to get a virus from an operation, but doctors are well aware of the ways to get infested and take all the necessary precautions. Plus you can take a specialty that does not deal with this sort of things, like peadiatrician or eye doctor or ear doctor or orthopedic doctor etc, there are so many.

I suppose there is a risk for doctors to be infected during operations; doctors come in direct contact with blood from infected patients.
