I just finished having laminate hardwood floors installed. I was advised not to put it in the kitchen because if i had a leak it would ruin the floor. Since having a new floor i notice how often i spill, drop and abuse my kitchen floor. I was told that if the dishwasher or sink leaked it would come up under the floor and cause it to warp.

It depends upon the integrity of tile to floor and type of wood flooring.
If the tiles are tightly bonded to the substrate, you can glue down hardwood right over it. Obviously, a nail-down installation cannot be done thru ceramic tiles. Also, the tiles may need to be roughened up for the glue to stick to them. Be sure that the tiles are level as many shades of wood will show an unevenness.
Some would recommend that plywood or some other substrate be put down before the wood strips but this will increase your floor height about an inch. This is the traditional way to install hardwood floors.
If you'd prefer a laminate floor (Pergo) or some other floating floor, you can install it over the tiles quite easily. You won't have to roughen the tiles as the laminate just floats above it. I would recommend the laminate floor that has the underlayment pre-attached to the flooring strips. It's almost $1/ft2 higher than the standard flooring but it goes down so quick it's amazing.
Be sure to select hardwood/laminate that is rated to handle the extra moisture present in the kitchen and seal around the edges well.

You would need to tear-up the Tile before you lay Wood down!
If you use an Insulated Under-lay you will have a Great look!(Easy to maintain!)
Tile seems to work Best in Bathrooms and Toilets(Personally)
