Corn Gluten Meal

* AAFCO - Corn Gluten Meal is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.
* Solid Gold states that it is: "Added to pet food to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats (think toxic waste). This holds the waste in. Kidneys and liver work overtime. Dogs may chew their lower backs. Feet may swell, so the dogs lick their feet. Corn is thought to be the #3 common cause of food allergies in dogs.
* Natura uses it in cat foods because "Corn Gluten Meal is a plant protein source that is low in ash. It is used in Natura cat foods to balance the natural ash in chicken."

*Ground Corn

* AAFCO - Ground Corn is the entire corn kernel, ground or chopped.
* Neither Natura nor Solid Gold use it since: "Although Ground Corn is a good quality source of carbohydrates, it is thought to be the #3 common cause of food allergies in pets.

Cal. Natural is the best food for dogs with food allergies, in my opinion, provided that the dog isn't allergic to the ingredients in that blend. The reason, aside from quality, is that it has the fewest ingredients of any other food available. If that doesn't work for your dog, there are a few other "OTC" brands that you might consider, including Wellness Simple Solutions, Natural Balance Limited Ingredient, and Canidae Lamb & Rice. Has the dog been tested for allergy? Food allergies are less common than environmental allergies...he could be allergic to darn near anything-the only way to know is through testing. If the dog turns out to have food allergies, you'll know just what to avoid after testing. And, though they are not foods that I would prefer to feed, if the allergies are being caused by food, and the foods available to you are not working, you may have to consider a prescription food for allergic dogs-these foods have hydrolyzed proteins, which are already broken down, so that the proteins can not cause an immune response from the dog. Rather than the Healthy Advantage, the dog should be trying the z/d, in my opinion. I'd ask the vet why he/she chose this food over one created for allergy.

Dogs can get allergies to the protein in food. Dyes in foods are another big one. They may not have an allergy to a food for years and suddenly get one.

My dog is highly allergic to wheat and corn. Corn is in almost all dog food. We get her NATURAL CHOICE PUPPY
CHICKEN MEAL, RICE & OATMEAL FORMULA from petsmart its the only thing without wheat or corn that I have found so far. Also have to watch her with dog treats everything has corn or wheat flour.

Our vet said its the corn most dogs cant tolerate

I strongly believe wheat and gluten is a problem ingredient for dogs.
