There is evidence that a tendency toward addiction is genetic. This is not to say that one is born an addict, only that a person with a genetic inclination is more likely to become addicted to behaviors and substances he is exposed to. The environment we live in and our learned coping skills probably have more to do with our tendency toward addiction, however.

I think it's carried on the genes. Addiction seems to run in families and some people become addicted easily and others not at all.

I don't think that the tendencies for addictions are passed from parent to child, I KNOW IT! Aside from being a retired psychologist, both my husband and I grew up in dysfunctional families. We both in our youth turned to drugs and drink to kill our inner pain, something known as self-medicating. We beat our addictions long ago but one of our three children also turned out to be an addict and he did not grow up as we did, we had beaten our own demons long before he was born. It is in the genes but does mean that all offspring will be addicts.

The propensity to addiction can be genetic but each person has the ability to make the right or wrong decision. Having a predisposition to addiction does not cause the addiction.

I have attended some health focus groups and the al anon representative told us that alcohol addiction is almost genetic. That many of their members just took one drink of alcohol and got addicted to alcohol just like that.
Scientifically it doesnt make any sense.
As for nicotine addiction, the nicotine lining in the brain must be built there layer by layer.

This has been researched in the medical field for years. It is said that if a person's parent was addicted that person is more susceptible to coming one there self. I also believe it also a matter of how you are raised as a child. I was raised by alcoholic parents. I seen many of the bad sides such as loss of job and many medically problems. This made me even more not to want to drink on a regular basis

I think it is learned behavior. People that come from addicted homes are just as likely to become addicted as those from homes that use no drugs whatsoever.

I think some people have an addictive personality and they become addicted quicker to things than other peple would. Yes I think its hereditary, like if your parents were addicted to drugs or alcohol I think its easier for you to become addicted to it.
