So shammys are traditionally used for cars and such because of how much h2O they can absorb, they don't scratch the vehicle, they are easy to wring oute, etc.

Is there any reason why people should not use a shammy as a towel?

The prompt for this question is that I am going on backpacking trip and a few years back I heard someone suggest packing a shammy instead of a towel.

You COULD use a chamois....but they take forever to dry and get heavy when wet.

Get a MSR PackTowel at an ourdoor store like REI. They are ultra lightweight and dry great....plus you squeeze them out and they are ready to be packed away. I included a link below....

YES!

Chamois leather is leather made from the skin of the Chamois, a kind of wild goat, although the term is also commonly used to refer to cloths made from the skin of other animals or a synthetic material version. Besides the softness and warmness of the leather, it has the useful property of bearing soap without damage. Its most common use is in automobile washing where it may be known as a "shammy" cloth. Its water absorbency makes it good for other uses such as in cycling shorts, although most modern cycling shorts use synthetic chamois leather. It was also used in purifying mercury, which was done by passing it through the pores of the skin, which are very close.[1]

Chamois leather is popular today on professional film and video camera viewfinders, as they provide comfort and absorb sweat for camera operators who spend long times with their eye planted on the viewfinder. Chamois leather is also sometimes used as a fuel filter by auto detailers.

Being somewhat spongy, it easily retains oil, making it good for wiping fingerprints from polished metallic surfaces.

The true chamois leather is often counterfeited with common goat, kid, or sheep skin; the practice of which is a particular profession, called by the French chamoiser

Don't use a shammy, use a thing called "Abosrber."
It comes in a long plastic container and it's better than
a shammy. when your done squeeze it out but don't
squeeze all the water out, roll it back up and put it back
in the container. It dosen't take up alot of room and it dries
better. I use it all the time, in fact I have two, one for the car
and one for me. You can buy it at Walmart in the auto section.
It comes in diffrent colors.

sure you can use it... be sure to wash it afterward... being made from a natural hide, it has the tendancy to harbor bacteria... so, after you use it on your body... rinse it through with a little soap (biodegradable of course) and water then hang dry...

good question...umm...can you find one big enough. you should look up what it is made out of to make sure it wont irritate your skin. its a good idea though if it wont do any harm to your skin so i dont know why not if it is made out of natural materials and dosnt have anything chemical to harm you in it.
