When I lived in Maryland, I used to wear those slip on shoes that they sell at Lands End and LL Bean; warm, thick soled, easily cleaned of dirt, muck and salt. I also liked to wear open backed clogs from Lands End with heavy socks. Weather can be unpredictable, but you don't need snow shoes or boots unless it's actually snowing!

When I was there, i wore only a running shoes with wool socks. It was cold and snowing in early January to March. The running shoes stand the whole season without problem.
