so how will I know if exercise will help? Do rope jumping and stationary bike help?

I think if you just squeeze the cheeks a few times for a long time until you feel a burn, that may be the easiest way to go, but don't take my word for it. I've never done it. I believe squats are a fabulous way to get nice buns and thighs.

No it's not easy!

Stairclimbers, step classes and stationery bike should help, HOWEVER, some people just don't use their butt muscles properly. If that's you, then no exercises will help until you learn to use them.

Those women with firm butts who never exercise - they DO use their butt muscles, so their butts get toned just by walking.

Try standing against a wall. Stand naturally, then check which parts of you touch the wall. If your butt touches and very little else, then you may not be engaging your bottom muscles when you stand and walk. You're allowing them to stick out behind you and come along for the ride!

Start thinking about tilting your pelvis and clenching your butt cheeks whenever you move - walking, stair climbing, biking etc. If you do strenuous exercise like that and don't get sore muscles in your bottom, then you haven't got it working yet.

It may help to have a personal trainer just for a session or two, and ask him/her to make sure the muscles are working, just so you get the feel of it.

If you work out in a gym, start with basic lunges, squats, leg presses, leg curls, and leg extensions. You should alternate two leg workouts a week so only work on the lower body twice a week and do workouts on the upper body and cardio on the other days. Keep your glutes tight through all exercises. I got all that information from this article: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/planet46.htm

doing squats and lunges will tone your glutes...especially lunges if you do enough a day.. they are painful after a while but it's good for your hammies and your butt, and squats too, and remember to stick your butt out so you can get a proper form and you can work your butt muscles.. but it's not gonna b easy.
